No Pain, No Gain — Finding Your IT Staff’s Real Pain Points

Every IT shop has them. The recurring tickets, the workarounds nobody documents, the late-night calls that everyone shrugs off as “just how things are.” If you’re not actively hunting for these pain points, you’re letting them compound.

Who’s Carrying the Weight?

Two usual suspects come up first.

Your Helpdesk. They’re handling a high volume of support tickets, often repetitive, often caused by user error. The challenge is providing effective training to reduce common issues, managing user expectations, and maintaining service levels with limited staff.

Your Legacy System Support Team. They’re keeping critical systems alive long after the makers stopped supporting them. The challenge is deciding when to upgrade, dealing with technical debt, and finding people who still know the outdated technology.

Both teams burn out quietly. By the time leadership notices, the damage is already done.

Taking Inventory the Right Way

A structured approach beats anecdotes. Gather both quantitative and qualitative data.

Interview your stakeholders. Get insights on challenges, frustrations, and areas where support is lacking. This is where the real stories live.

Run a company-wide IT satisfaction survey. Quantify common issues, measure satisfaction with IT services, collect suggestions for improvement.

Pull analytics from your service desk ticket data. The patterns are already there if you look for them.

What Counts as Useful Information?

Not all data is equal. Focus on these dimensions:

  • Frequency of the pain — how often does it come up?
  • User experience with the pain — how disruptive is it to their work?
  • Performance metrics (KPIs) — if you have them, use them
  • Resource utilization — is your team’s effort actually moving the needle?

Why This Matters

By collecting and analyzing this kind of information, a CIO can pinpoint where processes are inefficient, where technology fails to meet needs, or where there’s a disconnect between IT services and business requirements.

This approach does more than identify current issues. It helps forecast future pain points, so you can manage them proactively instead of reactively.

Celerity Insights helps you ask the right questions and turn unknowns into knowns.
